Men’s cancers are invisible. The prostate, hidden deep within the body, is not an organ that is either easily seen or widely discussed. It is neither an organ that has any beauty attached to it nor is it in a beautiful place. But, when diagnosed with cancer, it can strike at the heart of any relationship and cause the death of thousands of men, regardless of their age, social status, race, creed, or sexual orientation. Men tend to be less forthcoming about health issues, especially when it involves their sexuality.
The campaign to raise awareness of men’s cancers is where breast cancer was 30 years ago, in terms of public involvement and funding. You can contribute to THE CURE for breast cancer by simply purchasing the right brand of toothpaste with a pink ribbon on the package. Purchase a pink license plate. Run in a marathon. The men’s cancer groups are at the fringes of our discussions; on the edge of our conscience. Not yet a cohesive organization nationwide – more a loose group of very dedicated individuals who have formed effective small gatherings to deal with this intrusive, often deadly disease. We are at the beginning of a long journey.
Our goals are somewhat different from other cancer foundations:
- We are committed to supporting organizations that provide direct assistance to cancer victims, and their families, on the basis of need.
- We want to provide information and support for the families of the cancer victim – a crucial element of the recovery process.
- We are committed to the cause of men’s cancer prevention through diet and exercise, for instance. There is also information on diet to help you in recovery, as well. We provide links to the latest research and recommendations for all stages of cancer care.
Speaking broadly, we want to become a clearing house for a very broad range of information, opinion, and sharing. For instance, where are the best offshore pharmacies for affordable prescriptions? At this moment you would have to spend many hours researching on the Internet, and elsewhere to find all the information and advice a newly diagnosed cancer patient will need. We hope to organize all that essential information on our site. To this end, we will happily recommend other sites that are, in some way, competitive with us.
We also hope to operate as a forum where constructive ideas can be shared or exchanged. We personally will not be offering medical advice, per say, as neither of us are doctors. This is an information site where you can gather ideas or experiences and then discuss them with your personal physicians or health care providers.
It’s a big project. We are not funded by either a family trust fund or the government. We are hoping to add another voice in the chorus of men’s cancer awareness but it is not something we can do by ourselves. We need your help.
